The Problem
School dances are a time for celebration, friendship, and memories—but it's also a time when risky decisions can have serious consequences. That’s why Reality Illinois and Teen Ambassadors of DuPage County recently stepped up to lead their first Sticker Shock Campaign—a powerful peer-to-peer prevention effort to remind their classmates to stay sober and safe during prom— by partnering with local prom vendors to display messaging that reminds teens to stay sober this school dance season.
School dances often present opportunities to drink, and even teens who have never considered using alcohol before can get caught up in the moment while celebrating with friends. For example, according to a survey by AAA, 41% of teens ages 16 to 19 said they would most likely drink or use drugs on prom night.
We know that adults providing alcohol to teens during school dance after-parties has also been a big problem in our communities and can lead to devastating outcomes. In fact, data from the Illinois Youth Survey for DuPage County shows that, within the past year, 45% of 12th grade students were given alcohol by their parents with permission.
What Can Teens Do?
- Never drink and drive! Do not get into a car with a driver who has been drinking.
- Arrange for safe transportation before the school dance arrives.
- Remember you can always say "no" and do not have to do anything you do not want to do.
- If it doesn't feel safe, it probably isn't. Trust your instincts.
- Watch out for your friends and have them do the same for you.
- Never be afraid to call your parents or a trusted adult.
